Bringing things up to date…

This site has been dormant for some months but the opportunity is being taken to bring things up to date as we continue to celebrate the remarkable surviving Terrier locomotives between now and the 150th anniversary of the youngest of the class in 2030. These pages may have been quiet, but there is activity to report…

‘Fenchurch’ has been on active service at the Bluebell Railway and followed her visit to the Isle of Wight last year with a trip to the Watercress Line, and this month made an appearance at the Severn Valley Railway’s Spring Steam Gala.

‘Martello’ continues in operation at Bressingham Steam and Gardens which is the subject of the Channel 5 series ‘Inside the Steam Train Museum’, offering an inside view of the operation.

‘Newport’ was withdrawn from service at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway on the expiry of her boiler certificate following a decade of running. The loco will be missed during her overhaul.

‘Boxhill’ was moved into a prominent position on display at the National Railway Museum in York.

‘Knowle’ was seen on display at the Weald of Kent Steam Fair, since when the Kent & East Sussex Railway and The Terrier Trust CIO have announced that the loco is being assessed with a view to a return to steam for some duties during 2024 to mark K&ESR’s 50th anniversary year. The loco is on stands at Rolvenden locomotive works with its wheels removed. Further news is awaited.

Following the failure of ‘Poplar’ in 2022 whilst at the Bluebell Railway, the Terrier Trust CIO has reported that a number of engineering inspections have taken place and physical work on some of the components that sustained damage could start shortly.

The Gallery has been updated and you can read about the surviving Terriers here.

We continue to welcome contributions of photographs to enhance the gallery. If you have shots from 2023 or the current year please do send them to Terrier150@btinternet.com.

More news will be posted as it becomes available.
