Hornby’s 2022 range includes two sets of models marking the 150th anniversary of the Terrier class of locomotive.
The first is a Limited Edition set of the Terriers resident at the Kent & East Sussex Railway.
The K&ESR has been synonymous with Terriers since purchasing the 1872 built No. 70 ‘Poplar‘ in 1901. Having spent most of its life on the line, to celebrate its 150th anniversary the Railway commissioned ‘Poplar‘s’ overhaul, with the locomotive returning resplendent in its original livery of Stroudley ‘improved engine green’.
The second Terrier No. 78 ‘Knowle‘ completes this celebratory brace of Stroudley’s locomotives. Now preserved at the K&ESR ‘Knowle‘ today carries the plain black Southern livery with ‘sunshine’ lettering.
This boxed set of 500 has been produced with the full cooperation of The Kent & East Sussex Railway and loco owners, The Terrier Trust CIO.
K&ESR have secured a good stock of the sets and will be advising how supporters can secure these shortly. Details can be found on the Hornby website here.

The second set features ‘Newport‘, the Terrier that has been on the Isle of Wight the longest and the only surviving engine to have served on the Isle of Wight Central Railway. In January 1981, ‘Newport’ had the honour of being the first locomotive to be worked on in the in the new workshop at Havenstreet, although the locomotive was pushed rather than travelling under its own steam. ‘Newport’ was fully restored in 1989, and returned to service in 2014.
